After spending so many hours browsing through Pinterest and binge-watching design shows on Netflix (Side note: Check out my Netflix recommendations here) it's hard not to spend hours upon hours in the day mentally creating my dream home... So I thought I'd round up some of my favourite home trends right now that are sure to give you a little inspiration.
1. Sustainable materials
Surprise, surprise. Sustainability is a trend that seems to be reaching into every aspect of lifestyle from fashion all the way to interiors and I'm totally on board. The idea of sustainability centres around making conscious buying decisions and so, investing in good quality products that will last you a long time is naturally the best place to start. You can also do your part by doing research on brands and products before you make any purchases.
2. Colourful Monochromes
This may sound like an oxymoron, but hear me out; monochromatic schemes don’t have to be black and white, they just need to have one, single colour. To nail this trend choose one bright colour to use throughout the room, you should use it on the walls, furniture and other soft furnishings. Then choose one accent colour to use on a few accessories that will break up the space and voila – you have a super trendy room with minimal effort on your part! Just be warned, because this trend isn’t for the fainthearted and takes complete commitment to pull off.
3. Earth tones
I hate to break it you, but grey is out and warm, rich tones are back in. Think terracottas, olive greens, browns and mustards. Layering these neutral tones is a great way to create visual interest and makes for a cosy, warm interior. You might have bad associations with these colours ( AKA. your parent’s house in the 80s) but don’t be fooled, because earth tones are super versatile and work well in both traditional and modern designs.
4. OTT Bathrooms
If there ever was a room to make a bold design statement, why not the loo? I should preface this by stating that nautical/seaside themes don’t count. Over the top bathroom interiors are a trend we personally can’t get enough of at the moment – the quirkier the better! The bathroom is a great place to experiment with unique colours and patterns, as you don’t have to worry too much about it matching the rest of the house. Try using a unique wallpaper (PS. Chintz is also back!) or choosing a fun, bright paint colour or tiles to give the room some personality. If that’s too much of a commitment you can bring in pattern and colour through accessories like towels and bath mats.
5. Japanese luxury
Japanese inspired design is also making a huge comeback this year. However, we’re not talking about the minimal look that might have been the first thought to cross your mind. Instead this trend is incorporating silk fabrics, cherry blossom designs, water colour and ornate bird motifs to create a maximalist, oriental look. It’s another look that’s super easy to recreate with the right accessories and just oozes character.
