The ins and outs of shelf styling

Shelf styling has become a major trend in interior decorating, but it’s easier said than done to get your shelves to look as good as the ones you’ve seen on Pinterest or Instagram. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of tips and tricks that are guaranteed to boost your shelf-esteem.

Consider colour

Decide on a colour pallete before you start decorating as this will give ensure that your shelves look cohesive. You don’t need to know the ins and outs of colour theory, just choose a few colours that work well together and get going. If you’re really not confident in choosing colour try using a neutral base of woods, whites and greys and introduce colour through the accessories.

Accessorise

Needless to say, accessories are the life blood of shelf-styling. Plus, this gives you the perfect opportunity to use all of those quirky décor pieces you’ve randomly picked up but haven’t had the foggiest idea of what to do with. Yes, we’re talking about that golden pineapple and pastel rabbit. Or if you’re a candle hoarder this may finally be a worthy place to display your collection.

Three’s allowed

Select one item to be the focal point for each shelf. This should be the most interesting item or the item that makes the biggest statement. Something else to consider when arranging décor is the rule of threes – things tend to look better when they are in odd numbers.

Fully booked

Books are what shelves are made for after all, but only select books that will look good on your shelf. Think more along the lines of that vintage book with the ornate spine you picked up thrifting rather than your Oxford Dictionary. For a bit of variation place some books vertically while stacking others horizontally.

Get Artsy

Artwork is another must for styling shelves. It’s a great way to inject some colour and to personalise the space. Also, shelves are a wonderful spot to display that picture frame that you never ended up hanging or to show off some stylish prints. Metal or wooden frames can be used to create visual interest by bringing some textures into the mix.

Liven things up

Add some energy and life to your shelf with a houseplant or floral arrangement. Plants that have a bit of height are the best to go for, or plants that will grow over the side and hang, like a string of pearls. But, don’t even think about keeping your plant in the plastic pot it came in rather go for a patterned pot or glass atriums to elevate your décor. The devil is in the detail after all.
