The truth is, while thrifting is kind to the environment and a great way to get some much-needed retail therapy, it’s also time-consuming and can be overwhelming and unproductive at the best of times, throw in Corona and it's near impossible. That’s why Instagram thrifting is my new favourite way to shop.
Yes, you read that right. Instagram thrifting or ‘thriftstagram’ is a growing trend, where Instagram accounts sell thrifted clothes. Think along the lines of a virtual thrift store, where you can find anything from second-hand clothes to designer labels.
Why I'm a fan
Firstly, any way to shop online and save the environment is a win in my books, especially considering that we're still in lockdown here in South Africa and that we're a bit starved for online shopping. Plus, it’s a convenient way to thrift because even though I love the excitement of finding a hidden gem in a vintage store, these beautifully curated accounts have trawled through rails of clothing so I don’t have to.
The items are one of a kind – well, sort of. While it’s not impossible that someone out there has the same item, it’s unlikely that you’ll be playing ‘who wore it best’ at Saturday night’s zoom party while wearing an item bought from one of these accounts. A downside to this is that because there’s only one of each item available you may have to rush to buy it. This could lead to impulsive buying decisions, however because these stores don’t take returns, you’ll probably think much more seriously about whether or not you actually want the item. Also, I have to admit that the adrenaline rush adds to the experience.
It’s also a great way to find a bargain and support local businesses. While you’ll have to pay for postage it only seems fair given how reasonably priced most of the items are.
